“The coming of Halloween is a good time for Christians to remember that evil spirits are real and that the devil will seize every opportunity to trumpet his own celebrity. Perhaps the best response to the devil at Halloween is that offered by Martin Luther, the great Reformer: “The best way to drive out the devil, if he will not yield to texts of Scripture, is to jeer and flout him for he cannot bear scorn.”

On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther began the Reformation with a declaration that the church must be recalled to the authority of God’s Word and the purity of biblical doctrine. With this in mind, the best Christian response to Halloween might be to scorn the Devil and then pray for the Reformation of Christ’s church on earth. Let’s put the dark side on the defensive.

Forget celebrating a stupid Pagan Festival called Halloween, 31 October is this Saturday. For Australians that means the anniversary of the Light horse charge on Beersheba. This victory set up the taking of Jerusalem and the founding of the modern state of Israel. The Wells of Beersheba – captured by Muslims 31st October 1517, liberated by the ANZAC Light Horse 400 years to the very day – 31st October 1917. Four hundred years to the very day! Coincidence or the hand of God?

The 4th and 12th Australian Light Horse charged over 6km of open terrain, against 4600 Turks ensconced in their trenches, backed by machine guns and German artillery (aided by their Kiwi mates who cleared the surrounding hills of machine guns). They took the Wells and lost just 32 men! And for the first time in hundreds of years the gateway to the city to which Jesus will return (Jerusalem) was open! “Many nations claim to have mounted the last cavalry charge in history, but most of these actions were minor skirmishes of no real significance in the outcome of the war in which they fought. The Australian Light Horse attack on Beersheba was the last important cavalry charge in history and the last to win a resounding victory that altered the course of a war.” (And Israel). (True Australian War Tales).

At a mile distance their thousand hooves were stuttering thunder, coming at a rate that frightened a man – they were an awe inspiring sight, galloping through the red haze – knee to knee and horse to horse – the dying sun glinting on their bayonet points. (800 Horsemen – Riders of Destiny).”

As one Israeli official later put it: “Had Beersheba not been captured that day then we Israelis may not be here today.” (800 Horsemen – Riders of Destiny).”
