“Many of [our politicians] are not happy that the number of Christians is growing in Nepal.”

(Kathmandu, Nepal)—As the somewhat chaotic government in Nepal attempts for a third time to agree on a Constitution, Christians are hoping at least one new law does not become ratified.

According to a Compass Direct article, a new criminal code awaiting approval by Parliament would make it illegal for a person from one faith “convert a person or abet him to change his religion.”

The law would make evangelizing a criminal offence punishable by fines, up to five years in prison and deportation if the offender is foreign.

The new legislation seems to have been pushed this far under the radar of Nepal’s minority Christian leaders.

“We have not heard of this,” said Lokmani Dhakal, general secretary of Nepal Christian Society. “We need to look into this.”

Believers around the world can be praying for the Christian community in the South Asian state, and that this measure would not become law.
