Defend Marriage 2008Dear Pastor,

As I’m sure you are aware, marriage is under attack today as never before. Yet marriage is vitally important for healthy families and a stable society. Australians have a brief but important opportunity this week to defend marriage – can you help?

The saying “as goes the family, so goes the nation” reminds us that nothing is more fundamental to a stable society than healthy marriages. Successful societies around the world and throughout the ages have esteemed marriage. As Hebrews 13:4 says: “Marriage should be honoured by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.”

The federal government’s current moves to end the honoured and privileged status of marriage in Australia, by giving marriage rights and benefits to same-sex couples, are most dangerous. Other countries that have gone down this path have found that marriage has become increasingly irrelevant and ignored. Over time, diminishing marriage in this way will adversely affect us all, including churches.

Attached to this email is some information on three bills which would undermine marriage. They are the subject of inquiries by the Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee and submissions are invited from the public. You have an important opportunity to uphold marriage by making short submissions to these inquiries – a one page letter would suffice.

The bills would replace all references to “married couples” with the new concept of “couple relationships”. Children would be defined as the “product of a couple relationship”, thereby denying the reality that it takes a man and a woman to conceive a child.

Can you please help defend marriage? You will need to be quick – the deadline for submissions is this Friday 25 July.

    Dear Catch the Fire,

We are deeply concerned about this issue and question why the Rudd Government has been deliberately very quiet on this issue. You could ask 100 people in the street, and it is highly likely the majority have absolutely no idea about this proposed legislation and how it will seriously damage and undermine marriage.

Why is it that in a democratic country, the gay community (comprising 4-5%(at the most) of our population) is driving the agenda concerning changes to the legal status and definition of marriage that has been a foundational strength of this great Country for over 200 years?

If the 3 bills are approved, we will see a significant setback for Biblical righteousness in Australia.

    We are very very concerned

    Regards,

    Phil and Gill
    Sydney (Australia)
